My Whirlpool dryer heats sometimes but not very well. What part is most likely to be the culprit? I'm thinking the heating element could fail in this manner.

Hello Aaron, Thank you for the question. We suggest testing the Thermal Cut-Off Kit. The thermal cut-off turns off the heating component when the dryer overheats, ensuring there is a consistent level of heat at all times. If the appliance is not heating properly you may need to replace these parts. We hope this helps, good luck with this repair!
