Product Information
Description:
This replacement brake cable is supplied by original equipment manufacturer for use on Toro walk-behind lawn mowers. It is an authentic high quality part, it is not an aftermarket imitation. The purpose of this cable is to stop the blade when the control handle is released on walk-behind mowers. If the cable is broken it will cause the brake to not release even when the lever is pressed. Please note, one metal rubber insulated cable is included per order. You may need pliers to complete this repair.

Toro Timemaster mower engine brake cable broke.
Read the instructions that were included. I removed the old cable, paying attention to how it was routed and connected. Then starting at the top, installed the new cable, routing it around the engine and connecting it to the engine brake. It needs 1/8 inch of slack where the cable is secured to the mower.

Brake cable and traction cable
Traction cable broke. I replaced the blade brake and traction cable at the same time. You will need 2 new cable ties to replace 2 that you cut off. The blade break has a special end on it. Be sure to place the upper end of this pointing down, slide it in the slot, then rotate it into position. Do not cut the plastic tip off. No don't do it.

After replacing the traction cable, make sure the handle end is loose to give plenty of slack to connect the lever at the transmission. Then connect the handle end. Next, you will have to adjust the retention screw to make it engage again. A couple of tries will get it right.

If you do these repairs, the next time it will be easy.

Engine brake cable [to the blade drive belt] broke.
Initially, I viewed several YouTube video’s prior to starting to get a general idea of what was needed.
Before starting, removed the spark plug wire, and made sure the oil cap and gas cap were on tight as I new I had to tilt the mower on its side. The parts package came with pretty good instructions. The cable package also came with a new brake armature, but this was not needed, just the cable.
1] Removed the plastic cover over the blade belt drive mechanism.
2] Cut the zip ties on the existing wire/cable loom.
3] Removed the cable from the blade activation bar at the top of the mower handle [YouTube videos were great for this step!]
4] Measured the amount of cable extending past the cable hold down located under the engine.
5] Loosened the cable hold down fastener under the engine and removed the existing cable.
6] Tilted the mower on its side to access and remove the cable end and spring from under the mower deck. This is done by reaching between the mower deck and the left rear wheel.
7] Backwards retraced all steps above to install the new cable.

The part was in good condition on arrival. I did not install the metal bracket just the cable. Stand the mower up in front wheels to put cable over hook, I found that to be easier. If they sell the cable without the metal bracket get that.
