Product Information
Description:
It is a genuine OEM supplied part that is specially made for use with Craftsman trimmers. This is an identical replacement for a missing or a damaged starter pulley that was installed on a new unit. The pulley is an important component of the recoil-starter mechanism which allows a user to pull-start the engine. Make sure to check the appropriate diagrams of your specific model for the exact location and application of this part. Keep in mind this high-quality pulley is made of durable plastic and is sold individually. Note, the other pieces of the recoil-starter assembly are all sold separately. |

Broken cogs on starter pulley
The challenging part was winding the coil spring into its housing and getting it anchored. I used the pulley itself on a flat surface to wind the spring into its housing cover. Then it stayed in place in its housing cover which I next placed in the housing and forced the spring end into the slot in the housing. Of course the pull rope had already been secured to the pulley. The pulley spring had to be wound up before passing the pull rope through the casing hole and clamping it to keep the spring from unwinding before securing the pull handle to the rope.

Starter pulley stripped.
Removed old pulley by loosening two guide clips. Removed starter rope from old pulley and put it on new pulley. Did not need to replace the starter spring which stays in place. New starter pulley only snaps over spring in one position of 360 degree rotation. Trick is to wind the rope so no slack in it when pulley snaps in. I readjusted the length of the rope several times to get it right. Maybe would work faster by working from the handle end?
I had broken the momentary switch when disassembling the unit. Popped in new one in a few minutes.

Coil spring slipped from worn notch in starter pulley.
removed 3 allen screws from rear cover
removed 4 torx screws from forward side of engine housing releasing engine from shaft.
disconnected throttle cable from carburetor
set motor aside, removed 2 screw from pulley keepers
remove pulley and spring.
place new spring in metal housing, taking care to hold spring in place in its housing place the unit into the recess in engine housing so that the exposed hook on spring goes into its slot in the recess.
oay close attention to how the pull string is attached to the pulley or take a photo of it.
remove the string from the old pulley and attach it to the new one.
place the pulley overtop of the spring so that the hook on the inner part of the coil spring goes into the slot on the pulley.
put the pulley keepers and screw back in
The tricky part is winding the spring so that it will roll up the string a youtube video can show you better than I can explain it.
re-connect the throttle cable and re-install the engine in the reverse order that you disassembled it.

Screwdriver, please read how I competed my repair for a BIG HELPFUL TIP
STARTER PULLEY BLEW APART
Re-installing the starter pulley was a cake walk.......the hard part was the recoil spring! In taking apart the unit to see why my pull start, stopped pulling, I had taken off the cover and right off the bat I could see the plastic starter pulley had a huge chunk missing and it was done for. I removed the starter pulley and was introduced to the re-coil spring up close and personal like. I ordered my replacement part (and just like in the past Ereplacement parts were awesomely quick!!) My part arrived and my weeds were already to high and certain loved ones were already moaning about my mini rain forest, that was in the process of taking over the front and back yards! So I went to the usual library YouTube to get the easy way to wind the spring back up and I thought I found quick and easy ways.....not! Once put into the real world, it wasn't practical, I think some videos were made just to make a video on you tube and others were videos that would get the job done, but took the task up into the "HARD" OR "EXPERT" levels. After some blood, sweat and a big handful of colorful metaphors (or 2) I grabbed a magnet from a old hard drive I had laying around (any decent magnet would work) and stuck it to the underside of the recoil spring casing and I was able to easily wind the spring back in the casing with out any problem what so ever!!!! And it held it in place securely until I needed it!! It will make you fell like a boss! And if you spring casing is plastic (mine was metal) it will still help you hold it in while your winding it back in, you just need to put the casing on top of the magnet for a couple of winds and then you'll be able to pick it up (or not) to finish off the job! I hope this helps everyone who has to tackle this task as I did, this will cut the time down.

Correct part, working like new, but be careful with spring.
I accidentally let the spring unwind, which took extra time to get back to where I needed it to be. Once I figured out how to wind it back up and lock in place, my weed eater was back up and working great again.
