Very easy on the Echo GT225 trimmer. Remove 2 torx head screws (#25)from upper cowling cover and then remove the starter rope assembly--5 more #25 torx head screws. Unscrew the starter pulley and replace it with new one and reassemble and done.

    1. remove engine from trimmer shaft
    2. remove all outer housing
    3.remove fuel tank
4.carefully remove, starter assembly from crankshaft, and also Clutch assembly, as it is the part that holds the Flywheel on,, "BOTH ARE RIGHT HAND TREADS"
    5. Remove Flywheel
Note..... Be careful not to strip threads on starter assembly,, Very thin metal where threads are.
When reattaching the starter assembly and the clutch assembly, do not over tighten, as running the trimmer will keep it tight?

    Socket set, piece of rope

Just like others have said, I removed the spark plug and inserted a piece of rope to hold the piston. I was then able to remove the old starter pawl assembly and replace it with the new one. Easy! I must say also, the replacement pawl assembly was a better design. It had two pawls to catch the starter drum instead of one. That is probably why it had become distorted and was failing. Too much leverage during the pull start for one pawl to handle.
