2) Used 5/8" x 6" oak dowel as replacement for missing left hinge portion of door.
3) Drilled 5/16" x 1-1/4" deep hole into end of 5/8" dowel; fits the metal hinge pin from left side of mower.
4) Cut a 1/2 wide by 5" long and 1/4" thick piece of aluminum as a spacer below the oak dowel; this centers the dowel off of the door with the left hand hinge pin.
5) About 5/16" from end of aluminum spacer, drilled a 7/64" hole, tapped for 32 threads per inch, and countersunk to accommodate flat head, stainless steel, #6 machine screw. This screw cannot come undone because the countersunk head is between the aluminum spacer and the oak dowel. This screw provides the point whereby the looped end of the spring will attach.
7) Drilled quantity = 3 9/32" holes in far end and through oak dowel and 1/4" thick aluminum spacer, then used #6 x 1" stainless steel (SS) pan head screws, SS flat washers, SS lock washers and SS nuts to secure dowel and aluminum spacer to rear lawnmower door.
8) The door was replaced by inserting the right side, with spring, to the right side hinge pin. The left side spring was placed over the oak dowel, maneuvered into positing and the left hand hinge was inserted and tightened. The long arm of each spring was then rotated to the retaining catch as provided on either side..
NOTE: Saved the purchase price of a new or used door and enjoyed inventing a very durable solution to a difficult problem.
