Taking the drill apart was easy, so was replacing the part. Time spent was mostly on cleaning and greasing the drill before reassembly.

Firstly, I started with no experience of the inside of the tool, so I did things that proved unnecessary - like removed the chuck and stripped the whole gear box down to look for missing gear teeth, and also, frankly, to see how it was engineered. Finding nothing wrong after THAT, I was reassembling and noticed the shifter, a plastic slide with a notch in it, was bending, because a small feature had snapped.

So. Open the drill - remove all the Torx screws holding the case, and carefully wiggle out the ones holding the gear box to the body. Pull them out 1/4 (6mm) all round, pull gently on the box, and keep moving the screws out a bit at a time until the gear box is free. It can stay in the drill, but it needs to be loose.

Remove half the drill case.

Wiggle the shifter out

Put new shifter in, MAKING SURE it fully engages with the wire spring wrapped around the gear box. This wire is the shift lever !

Assemble the drill case again.

Reconnect the gearbox screws, by reversing the method for removal.
