I didn't get a deflector when this mower was given to me, the rope guide was missing also
Wasn't much to to doing it, just pick up on the piece that closes the discharge port and hook the deflector in place around the discharge port hinge, then ease downward the cover on top to hold the chute in place.

Just press the rope guide through the handle and screw the knob on it.
