Gears

The pump gear is also known as a worm gear, and is attached to a metal arm, which is turned by the clutch drum. When the gear turns, it operates the oil pump, which pumps oil up to the chain. This will keep the chain lubricated and working properly. If your old gear is damaged or stripped, you will need to replace it. Otherwise, it will not be able to activate the oil pump and therefore your bar oiler won't work properly.

Pumps

If you have noticed that the chain for your chainsaw has become very dry, it could be a sign that your bar oiler isn't working properly. You may also notice that the bar has become very hot, and the chain is producing smoke. This is another sign that your chain isn't getting sufficient lubrication, which can be caused when your bar oiler doesn't work. The bar oiler pump pushes oil from the oil tank to the chainsaw's bar. If the pump is not working properly or is damaged, oil will not be able to reach the bar, which can cause this symptom.

Pick-ups

Between the oil tank and the bar oiler, there is a hose called a pick-up. Its function is to carry the oil from the oil tank to the bar and chain. If your pick-up is damaged, it may be unable to perform this function and as a result your bar oiler will not work properly. The pick-up can also become clogged with debris over the course of its life, and this can cause it to malfunction as well. If this is the case, you may be able to simply clean and unclog it rather than replacing the part altogether.

Pinion

A pinion or pinion gear is another term for a pump gear for your chainsaw. The pinion gear drives the oil pump which lubricates the chain. One of the most common problems that you may encounter with the pinion gear is that after time and use it has become stripped, and therefore will not turn properly. If the pinion is not turning properly it can't engage the oil pump which will prevent your bar oiler from working properly. Sometimes the stripped pieces of the gear can fall off, so be sure to check for and remove them when you are replacing the gear.
