Levers

The lever in your edger is used to adjust the blade height, and engage the blades. If the lever is faulty or damaged in some way, it may cause a misalignment issue. This can also result in your edger being unable to adjust the blade height. If nothing occurs when you attempt to adjust the blade with the lever, it is a good indicator that something has come loose or broken. This can be a serious issue, and the lever will more than likely need to be replaced to fix this symptom.

Springs

Your edger uses a spring that provides tension and keeps the blades in place during operation. Without the tension, or with too little tension in the spring, you may not be able to properly adjust the height of your edger's blade. Over time, springs can lose their tension and will need to be replaced. A broken spring will cause this symptom as well, and likewise will need to be replaced. A worn or broken spring can result in other parts not working the way they were designed, like the blade-adjustment lever.

Rods

Inside your edger is a rod that connects the lever and the blade. Occasionally if your edger encounters rough terrain, it can cause the rod to bend. This will result in a misalignment between the lever and the edger blade. When this misalignment occurs, you may have difficulty adjusting blade height, or not be able to adjust the blade height at all. If your rod is bent, odds are you will need to replace it before you can adjust the blade height in your edger. Without the ability to adjust blade height, your edger won't run at optimal performance.
