Filters

If your cultivator is blowing black smoke from the exhaust port, your air filter could be clogged. Black smoke is caused by a rich fuel mixture (too much fuel, not enough air). When the fuel mixture is rich, the gas doesn't burn completely which creates carbon. Burning carbon will cause your engine to emit black smoke. Your cultivator's air filter is designed to prevent debris from entering the engine, so if your air filter is clogged, not enough air will enter the engine, causing it to run rich. Usually you can simply clean your air filter, but if it is damaged, you will have to replace it.

Carburetors

Your cultivator's carburetor ensures the right mixture of fuel and air enters the engine. If your carburetor is improperly tuned, your engine will get too much fuel and not enough air (known as running rich), and this will cause the problem of black smoke coming from the exhaust. Additionally, if your carburetor is clogged or damaged, it can also cause the engine to run rich, and produce black smoke. If your carburetor is improperly tuned, you can usually adjust the mixture screws to ensure the proper mixture. If your carburetor is clogged, you can disassemble and clean it, which usually fixes the problem as well. Be very careful when taking the carburetor apart, as there are many small pieces that can be easily damaged. Purchasing a carb kit can be an easy way to replace some of the smaller parts inside your carburetor. Take photos as you go, in order to keep track of all the small places while you disassemble and clean your carburetor. However, if you observe that your carburetor is damaged when you take it apart, you may need to replace it entirely.
