How to Replace the Chuck on a Jet Drill Press
Finish Nailer Repair - Replacing the Driver Guide (Ridgid Part # 79004001022)

The chuck for your drill press will accept up to a 5/8" shaft and attaches to the press by a number three Jacobs taper. It also includes a new chuck key. The chuck adjusts open and closed to securely hold a drill but, allowing you to use a variety of different sizes. There are three jaws inside the chuck that clamp against the drill bit. After years of hard use, these jaws will wear and your drill bit might begin to slip in the chuck. When this happens, it's time to replace the chuck.
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE CHUCK
1. Lower the quill.
a. Extend the quill assembly to its lowest position.
b. Lock the quill in place using the lock nut on the depth stop assembly.
2. Remove the chuck and arbor assembly.
a. Insert a drift punch into the slot on the side of the quill assembly.
b. Use a hammer to tap the drift punch until the chuck and arbor assembly breaks free from the spindle.
c. Remove the chuck and arbor assembly from the drill.
3. Separate the chuck from the arbor.
a. Protective gloves are recommended for this step.
b. Open the chuck to its widest position.
c. Insert a punch into the chuck (until the tip of the punch contacts the tip of the arbor).
d. Hold the chuck, arbor and center punch in one hand (with the end of the punch facing your work table).
e. Strike the punch against an anvil until the arbor breaks free from drill chuck.
f. Remove the arbor from the chuck.
INSTALLING THE NEW CHUCK
4. Install the new chuck.
a. Use a shop rag to clean any grease or debris from the new chuck and the arbor.
b. Open the new chuck until the chuck jaws are completely recessed into the body of the chuck.
c. Place the new chuck on the anvil (with the jaws facing down).
d. Install the arbor into the new chuck.
e. Use a rubber mallet to tap the arbor into the new drill chuck.
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT
