Edger: Leaks Gas

Check the primer bulb, grommet, fuel tank, fuel filter, and gas cap if your edger is leaking gas. Follow our repair and symptom guide to find the best way to fix this very common problem. This is a general guide for your repair; for more detailed information on your model, refer to the owner’s manual.

Fuel Filters
Fuel Filters
If your fuel filter is cracked, there is a chance that your edger will begin to leak fuel. When inspecting the fuel filter for a crack, the best place to look is along the seams, as this is the most common place for a fuel filter to crack. However, there are other parts of the fuel filter that can leak, so you will need to check the whole filter for damage if your edger is leaking. A cracked or damaged fuel filter can affect your edger’s performance in a number of ways, and therefore should be replaced.

Primer Bulbs
Primer Bulbs
The primer bulb is designed to draw fuel into the carburetor so it can be injected into the engine. The bulb itself is usually made of plastic, and therefore can occasionally crack. Because the primer bulb (during normal operation) will fill up with fuel, a cracked primer bulb will leak gas. Not only can this cause a mess and pose a safety risk, but it will decrease your engine’s performance. It may even cause your edger to die, or become unable to start.

Fuel Tank
Fuel Tank
A gas leak is a serious problem that you may encounter with your edger, and it could be caused by the fuel tank. Because the fuel tank is used to store available fuel for your edger, it is a logical first place to check for a leak. If you discover a crack in your fuel tank, it will need to be replaced or patched before your edger will be safe and effective to use.

Caps
Caps
The gas cap on your fuel tank screws on and off when you need to refill the tank with fuel. Over time, the threads on the tank or the cap can become worn or damaged. This will result in an imperfect seal, and can cause your fuel tank to leak. If the gas cap itself is damaged, for instance if there is a hole or a crack in it, this can cause a leak as well. If your gas cap is damaged or the threads are stripped and worn, you will need to replace it. Be sure to determine whether the threads on the gas cap or fuel tank (or both) are the ones that are worn, so you don’t replace the wrong part.

Grommets
Grommets
The fuel grommet in your edger essentially creates a seal on your fuel tank, where your fuel lines enter and exit. If the grommet is damaged, the seal may be compromised and the tank can leak. Occasionally, the grommet can become loose due to the vibration of the engine, and over time a leak can develop as a result. If this is the case, you should be able to simply press the grommet back into place and the leak will be fixed. Sometimes the fuel lines will begin to slide out of the grommet, especially if it is old and worn, and this can create a leak as well. This is another problem that can be fixed with a simple adjustment. However, if the grommet is damaged and a seal is no longer created, you will probably need to replace it.

Fuel Lines
Fuel Lines
Your edger’s fuel lines carry fuel from the tank to the carburetor. Sometimes these fuel lines can become cracked and weathered, and this can lead to a fuel leak. Occasionally, the fuel clamps on your lines will need tightening, and this can solve the problem. If the fuel lines become loose or disconnected, this can also cause a leak. The first step in this repair would be to make sure the lines are connected properly, and then you can inspect for a crack or leak along the line. A cracked fuel line will need replacing.
