Cultivator: Vibrates Excessively

If your cultivator is vibrating too much, check our symptom and repair guide for a list of parts we suggest checking and possibly replacing. Some of the parts include the drive shaft, tine shaft, bearings, engine mount, and pulley. Note: this is a general repair guide. Check the manual provided by your owner for more specific repair information related to your model.

Bearings
Bearings
Your cultivator has a bearing that is located on the tine shaft. Over the course of your cultivator’s life, the bearing can wear down or become damaged. If this occurs, when the tine shaft rotates during operation, it can cause the cultivator to vibrate. To determine if the bearing is causing this symptom, you will need to remove the tine shaft and inspect the bearing. If you notice that it is badly worn, or is otherwise damaged, you will need to replace it.

Pulleys
Pulleys
If your cultivator is vibrating excessively, it may have a damaged or worn pulley in the drive system. The pulley can simply become worn over the normal life of your cultivator. However, if this does happen, your cultivator can vibrate excessively. More noise than normal usually accompanies this vibration, and should be dealt with immediately.

Shafts
Shafts
Your cultivator’s transmission drive shaft can be found between the engine assembly and the transmission housing. If the drive shaft is kinked or damaged, it will not fit properly and can begin to rattle. This will result in more vibration being felt when the cultivator is running. To determine if the drive shaft is causing this symptom, you will have to inspect it manually. To do this, you will need to unscrew and remove the engine assembly, and set it aside. At this point, you will be able to access and remove the drive shaft, and determine if it is kinked.

Tines
Tines
The tines of your cultivator are used for weeding and loosening soil prior to planting. It is important to check the area you will be cultivating for rocks and debris before you begin the job, as these can cause the tines to break. A broken tine will reduce your cultivator’s ability to do its job properly. Furthermore, if one of the tines is broken it will cause your cultivator to vibrate excessively. If you notice a broken tine, you will need to replace it before your cultivator operates properly. Replacing a broken tine should fix this symptom.
