Starter Rope Pulls Freely or Little Resistance

Cultivator: Starter Rope Pulls Freely or Little Resistance

If your cultivator starter rope is loose and has no tension, check the following parts: the connecting rod, starter, pulley, and cylinder. Our repair and symptom guide can help you find the appropriate part to replace to fix this problem. Note: this is a general repair guide. Check the manual provided by your owner for more specific repair information related to your model.

Pulleys
Pulleys
If your cultivator’s starter rope pulls freely, the engine will not engage and your machine will not start. Some starter pulleys have ears that engage with the starter pawls on the flywheel. If the ears wear down they won’t engage to the pawls and the rope will pull freely. The pulley and ears are sometimes made of plastic, and this can make them susceptible to breaking. They can wear down because of other damage to the cultivator, or simply because of wear and age. Starter pulleys are usually difficult to repair, and it is often the best bet to replace the starter assembly entirely if it is causing this symptom.

Starters
Starters
Your cultivator’s recoil starter assembly is made up of the starter itself, a starter back plate and a starter cup with pawls. When your starter rope pulls freely or with little resistance, it is often related to one of these parts that make up the starter assembly. Sometimes these parts can be replaced individually, but replacing the entire assembly is a fast and easy way to solve this problem if you determine that a starter component is at fault.

Cylinders
Cylinders
The cylinder and the piston in your cultivator’s engine are essential to maintaining engine compression. If your engine lacks compression, it can cause the starter rope to pull freely, and your machine won’t start. The most common problem with the cylinder/piston is a worn or damaged piston ring. Over time, carbon buildups can cause these rings to become brittle, and eventually they can break. If the piston ring is the issue, you can simply replace it, and this problem should be solved. However, if there is further damage to the piston or cylinder, you may have to complete a larger repair.

Rods
Rods
You cultivator has a connecting rod that connects the piston to the cylinder. It is attached to the crankshaft, and when the crankshaft moves, it moves the piston. This creates the compression in the engine that is essential for the combustion process. If the connecting rod breaks, or somehow becomes disconnected from the piston or the cylinder, the crankshaft will continue to rotate but the piston will not move. This will result in a lack of resistance from the engine’s compression. Therefore, when you pull the starter rope, you will be met with little or no resistance. Your engine will not run with a broken connecting rod, so if you determine that this is the cause of this symptom, you will need to replace it.
