Cultivator: Blows Black Smoke From Exhaust
If your cultivator blows blue or black smoke from the exhaust, check the air filter and carburetor for damage. This is a not a common symptom, but can easily be fixed if you follow our repair and troubleshooting guide. Check the manual related to your model for more specific repair instructions. Filters
If your cultivator is blowing black smoke from the exhaust port, your air filter could be clogged. Black smoke is caused by a rich fuel mixture (too much fuel, not enough air). When the fuel mixture is rich, the gas doesn’t burn completely which creates carbon. Burning carbon will cause your engine to emit black smoke. Your cultivator’s air filter is designed to prevent debris from entering the engine, so if your air filter is clogged, not enough air will enter the engine, causing it to run rich. Usually you can simply clean your air filter, but if it is damaged, you will have to replace it.

If your carburetor is clogged, you can disassemble and clean it, which usually fixes the problem as well.
