Toaster: Toasts too Much or not Enough

If your toaster is toasting too much or not enough, a repair is needed. Inspect the control board and thermostat for signs of damage. Once you have figured out the part that needs to be replaced, use our troubleshooting guide to help fix the problem yourself. Knowing you have saved money and the environment is much more satisfying than purchasing a new appliance.

Control Boards
Control Boards
If your toaster won’t toast properly, the problem may be with the control board. Some toaster models use an electronic control board to control an electromagnet that holds down the toast carrier mechanism. When this mechanism is latched down, the heating element is powered on. An adjustment knob on the control board determines the charging time of a capacitor which in turn controls the amount of time that the electromagnet is powered and therefore the condition of the toast. If the control board is defective it may keep power to the electromagnet on for too long, and the toast will burn, or it may not stay on long enough and the toast will be too light. If your model uses this type of control board, check for loose wire connections or for foreign matter on the electromagnet before changing the board. Remember to unplug the toaster before attempting any repairs.

Thermostats
Thermostats
If your toaster won’t toast properly, the problem may be with the thermostat. Some toaster models use an adjustable bi-metal type thermostat to control the heating elements. While toasting, heat is directed at the bi-metal until it bends enough to open the thermostat electrical contacts and turn off power to the elements. With use and age, the bi-metallic strip may become distorted and the specifications may change regarding the amount of heat required to open the contacts. If the thermostat is defective it may keep power to the heating circuit on for too long, and the toast will burn, or it may not stay on long enough and the toast will be too light. If your model uses this type of thermostat, it would be the first item to suspect for this symptom. Remember to unplug the toaster before attempting any repairs.
