Blender: Controls or Buttons Don't Work Right

Are the buttons not working right on your blender? Before you consider purchasing a new blender, take a look at some of the common symptoms and diagnoses we have provided to help you fix it yourself. Check the switch, blade, sensor, motor, and base for any signs of damage. Read on for instructions on how to locate the problem part and how you can quickly and easily get it fixed.

Blades
Blades
Blender blades can also be called cutter assemblies, blending assemblies, and agitator assemblies. On some advanced models, the buttons or controls will not work if the blades are overloaded or not able to turn freely, meaning your blender won’t respond when you press the controls. Sometimes this error will be conveyed by the display with flashing lights. The blades will need to be replaced if they have seized. Unplug your blender before replacing the blade assembly. First remove the base from the blender jar by unscrewing it. The agitator and seal will pop out easily. Inspect the seal for damage and replace if necessary. Install the new blade assembly parts in the order you removed them, making sure the seal goes between the agitator and jar.

Motors
Motors
The blender motor can fail, meaning it won’t respond to the control board commands. This can happen because the control board isn’t detecting continuity through the motor. Or, the speed sensor can’t detect the motor turning because the magnetic ring is cracked or broken off completely. The solution to this problem is to replace the whole motor. To replace the motor, first make sure your blender is unplugged, and follow the directions above for removing the base and speed sensor. Remove the screws holding the brush/slip ring housing in place. Use an Allen wrench to remove the nut holding the shaft and place, and lift the fan off the shaft. Install your new motor in reverse order, checking your specific model manual for additional instructions.

Switches
Switches
The blender switch can also be referred to as a command board, circuit board, main board, switch board, or membrane. The components of the control board vary depending on your blender model. Usually if one part of the switch is not responding, the whole control assembly needs to be replaced. The issue could be with a fuse, sensor, or membrane contacts that become worn and damaged through use over time. Before replacing the switch on your blender, remove the jar and blade assembly and make sure it is unplugged. Flip the base over and remove the rubber feet. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the base cover in place. Bases
Bases
In rare instances the blender base, also known as collar, seat, or container base, needs to activate a safety switch. The switches will either be a micro switch or a magnetic switch. If the base is damaged and can’t activate the switch, it should be replaced. To replace this part, unscrew the base from the bottom of the jar. Pop out the agitator assembly and install it into your new base. Screw the base back onto the jar.

Sensors
Sensors
The blender sensor can also be referred to as a hall effect sensor, magnetic sensor, or speed sensor. This type of sensor detects how fast the motor is spinning by detecting changes in a magnetic field. It will instruct the motor to shut off if it begins spinning out of control. This is done through a magnetic ring that is fixed to the armature shaft of the motor or the fan blades of the motor. To replace the speed sensor, follow the directions above for removing the base cover off the blender, and then the inside cover which is usually located above the motor fan. Use pliers to lift the sensor off the motor fan assembly, and replace with your new part. Unplug the blender before beginning this repair.
