Trimmer starter rope began by stuttering on return, failed to turn over motor on start, then the return failed entirely.

The SS26 is complicated by the starter assembly attachment to the engine cover. This makes it difficult to assess a problem, or even further assess the success of a repair, until the entire unit is reassembled and everything is in place with 8 torx screws and you can try out the starter action. This caused some difficulty as a few times I thought I had it finished and had to start over again due to various mistakes with the winding and start cord routing. If you have a starter cord failure on this unit, I recommend replacing both the spring and the easy starter assembly either could have failed. On my unit the easy starter assembly had broken in two the stepped mount that actually tuns the flywheel upon contact with two pawls disconnected from the reel that holds the starter string (these two halves of the easy starter are connected with plastic snap tabs, two of which had broken on mine undoubtedly due to the endless number of pulls it sometimes takes to start this machine as it floods so easily (side note try priming only 2-3 times rather than the 10x recommended by manufacturer).

Anyway once the housing is off you\'re faced with the starter assembly the only challenge remaining in disassembly is to remove the clutch, which I found can be done with a pair of needle nose pliers opened and inserted into the central notches and turned with a screwdriver against the handles.

The rest is fairly straightforward and the excellent ereplacement videos on dealing with the starter spring and re-tensioning the starter string were invaluable. Just realize the SS26 is a bit more complicated in its assembly than the models used in the videos to illustrate these repairs.

I separated the engine from the shaft, this exposed the recoil and started assembly.
I determined the problem was the starter assembly, the spring had broken out from the assembly.
I replaced this making sure to preload the recoil, should have gone an extra turn.
Re assembled.
Replaced fuel tank because it was cheaper and easier than replacing just the fuel lines.

The trimmer was free, for 18 bucks it is working great.

the plastic \"Easy Start Assy\" became warped and was binding and wouldn\'t retract. I replaced the spring also because I had it apart for repair and it didn\'t cost much.

1. Move the rope to the new starter and wound it onto the spool.
2. Inserted the assembly onto the standoff and made sure the spring was engaged.
3. Rotated the assembly (1) revolution before threading the rope thru the hole to preload the spring assy.
4. Attached the pull handle and reassembled the end housing.

Starter assembly melted

Used parts diagram from this site.
Main trick was a clutch removal from the shaft.
I didn\'t realize that a clutch is threaded to the shaft and broke it during removal.
New clutch from this site actually shows an arrow that indicates a direction of rotation for a clutch to be removed. Original clutch didn\'t have that.
