It is a genuine OEM item which is made for use with Ryobi and Homelite handheld string trimmers. This special adapter allows the cutter head assembly to be connected. If it is worn or damaged the shaft would not engage preventing the cutter head from rotating. Note, this high-quality component is made of a durable metal and is sold individually. Left hand thread gave me some fits but once I got that off, the whole assembly slipped off and I put the new one on in under 15 minutes.

Replace the broken shaft adapter by threading it on the spindle. Then attached the head with the bolt.

Had to cut off the spool retainer. Removed spool housing by sliding it off shaft adapter. Removed the shaft adapter using an adjustable wrench. Attached the new shaft adapter using wrench, slid housing back on to shaft adapter, screwed spool retainer into shaft adapter.
