This authentic OEM sourced replacement part is designed for MTD lawn and garden equipment. Ball bearings are generally utilized to reduce friction between rotating parts. The balls or rollers take the load and spin, distributing the weight evenly while the minimal contact area of the ball reduces friction. The MTD blade shaft is basically a 5/8\" bolt secured to the edger by the bearing retainers on each side of the paddle that permits edging at different angles. 1, Removed the nut on the shaft (just as if replacing the blade)
2. Removed the entire shaft, noting where the shaft spacers were located for replacement.
3. Removed the blade cover/housing to allow access to the bearing housing bolts. I used a box wrench which made the removal easier because of the tight clearances, but an a

4. Removed the bearing housing bolts and housings, which contained the bearings.
5. I replaced both the housing and bearings, but I could have just replaced the bearings since the old bearings could have easily been tapped out of the existing housings and replaced with the new ones.
6. Reversed the above steps for replacement.
