Tools:
Pliers, Screw drivers, Socket set, Wrench (Adjustable), Wrench set
Took apart the gear box that drives the rototiller tines to replace the bearings, which in turn had to replace the other 3 parts. There are quite a few screws and other sections of the rototiller to take apart which was pretty much an all day job. Runs just like new.

Bushings worn out on tines shaft.

Michael from Hamilton, Ohio

Difficulty Level:
A Bit Difficult
Total Repair Time:
More than 2 hours
Tools:
Nutdriver, Pliers, Screw drivers, Socket set, Wrench set
Parts Used:
721P0170, 931-0374, 921-0175
1. Removed the covers around the tines.
2. Removed the housing that contained the chain drive and bushings.
3. Split the housing by removing all fasteners. Note: Remember where the fasteners were removed. There are holes in the case that have the handles attached at that point. If you get the fasteners in the wrong place you w ill have to remove them with the case mounted in the frame.
4. Removed old bushings and replaced. Had to clean the tine shaft with crocus cloth to get it back into the bushings.
5. Cleaned the case and greased all parts appropriately.
6. Replaced the gasket and reassembled the case.
7. Replaced the case in the frame.
8. Replaced all covers and guards. Total time to do was about 8 hours, but I took my time and cleaned and inspected as I went.

Tiller drive chain bushings, seals, and bearings worn out. Shafts are obsolete for this 1987 MTD tiller so I had to weld up the worn areas on the shafts and machine back to new size.
