This component is fitted into the body, and allows the operator to crank the reel's handle at a comfortable speed. The worm gear decreases the action, making it possible for small reels to handle large fish. This part performs best when kept clean and well lubricated with oil. The worm shaft is sold individually. A screwdriver is necessary for the proper removal and replacement.
