Control shaft and spring broke

I split the auger from the drive and supported the drive against a ladder so that I could keep it upright and didn\'t have to siphon out the gas. Disconnected the augur cable from the control shaft and withdrew the control shaft from the front. Put in new control shaft. Seemed to have too much play and wasn\'t sure it wouldn\'t rub on drive pulley so I added another washer to reduce the play. The spring was the challenge and the reason everything took so long. Since the old one broke and came loose the attachment points were not obvious. The exploded view only showed the spring but didn\'t show where it attached. The attachment point to the auger idler arm pulley was easy to find but I couldn\'t see anything on the other side but a hole in the sheet metal \'box\' enclosing the drive. I was concerned about using that directly since the spring end would have been exposed to the snow. After talking with a snowblower repairman I put a small eye-bolt in the hole and attached the spring to the eye-bolt so that the entire spring was contained in the \'box\' . Yesterday and today I had the \'opportunity\' to test the snowblower on 12 inches of wet (32 degree) snow and it did well.

Before starting, I placed wood 6x6 (5.5x5.5) blocks under the rear sides of the frame to balance it when the blower assembly is removed. Removing the plastic bottom plate is optional but can make removing/replacing the idler spring easier. I then:
1. Removed the plastic housing over the drive and auger belt pulleys.
2. Removed 1 bolt each side of frame to back off the entire blower assembly.
3. Removed blower belt from top pulley
4. Tilted blower assembly 90 degrees to rest on snow intake face
5. Removed pin from control arm and control rod
6. Removed 2 bolts on frame that hold the blower idler assembly and released idler spring
7. Pulled broken control rod through frame from front
8. Put 2 thin washers on control rod between frame and wings on rear end of rod
9. Put control rod through hole in frame rear and re-attached the control arm and pin
10. Put washer on control rod at idler end and put rod end into matching hole on idler arm
11. Re-attached idler arm spring to idler arm
12. Re-attached idler arm with control rod in place to frame with 2 bolts removed earlier
12. Checked alignment of idler pulley with drive pulley to ensure all parts in proper place
13. Put blower belt on blower assembly pulley
14. Dropped blower assembly onto rod at front of frame and fastened with removed bolts
15. Threaded blower belt over drive pulley and around idler pulley
16. Tested operation from the operator\'s handle
17. Replaced the belt cover

Followed instructions that came with the new control rod which included steps to disassemble and replace the broken rod. Since I had already disassembled the blower in order to confirm the problem it would have been nice to have had the disassemble instructions before hand. I had disassembled more of the blower than necessary. Even so it was no big deal.
