2. Put spring and retainer into spring knob
3. Placed assembly into retainer
4. Replaced 3 screws
5. Adjusted tension
6. Inserted guard post into assembly

Jointer bearing failure

Removed jointer knife head assembly.
Pressed old bearings from assembly carefully marking right and left bearing mounts before removal.
Pressed new bearings into assembly.
Mounted assembly back into jointer base.
Checked alinement and bold torques.
Made final jointer table alinement adjustments and started j ointer.

A part had broken under the strain of the shield spring

I removed three screws which held the assembly in place and together.
Reviewed the manual to insure the parts had been assembled correctly. I purchased the tool used only recently. The jointer shield is many years old and could have been incorrectly replaced some time before I acquired the tool.
I Reassembled the parts, lubri cated the shaft and screwed them back into place.
