1. Disassembled the housing and the internal parts. T-15 Torx is necessary.
2. Cleaned all parts using a spray brake cleaner. Use IPA or another electronic solvent as an alternative.
3. Suspected the field coils to be the problem. Measured the resistance with an ohmmeter, one side was 0 ohms the 3 other were completely open. T he field coils were clearly identified as the failed component.
4. Ordered and received the new field coils components.
5. Reassembled the field coil. Note: the flat blade pins of the switch speed control must be carefully inserted into the coil, no soldering is required but the pins must be carefully centered. It is possible to misalign the brush contacts (physically part if the flat bladed pins) if this is not done carefully.
6. Reassemble the housing and the other mechanical parts.
7. Plug in the power cord to the outlet and perform the final test.

This was a Dremel 6000 Sander. I took the unit apart and replaced the open field and it was back in service. Note, many vintage Dremel tools indicate that the parts are not available. With careful searching you can find that other Dremel tools have the same part used in them and they are available. eReplacementParts is the site that seems to make this search possible and they are a good source of hard to locate parts!

1. Disassembled the housing using a Torx screwdriver; unscrew front coupler. Remove the back clip.
2. Unscrew the two blue brush retainer caps (caution: spring underneath under slight tension).
3. Pull out the spring and brushes. Note: Brushes may come off the spring, but can be removed later.
4. Lift the assembly out of the bottom cover; remove the rear rubber bearing support.
5. If the brushes did not come out with the spring(s), Use a small flat blade screwdriver and nudge it outward from the inside being careful not to nick the armature wires. Just push it outward till it clears the rear bearing assembly.
6. Gently pull out the armature; then pull out the on-off switch/speed control from the field coil. Note: This must be done carefully since it has four small brass contacts.
7. Remove and replace the field coil. Make sure the brass contacts of the switch assembly go directly into the field coil\'s small connectors. DO NOT FORCE! Work each contact until all four of the speed control contact goes into the field coil smoothly (these must go all the way in with no spacing between the two assemblies). Again, do not force the contacts since the field coil contacts are delicate and once disfigured, you may ruin the new part.
8. Reposition the front chrome push-button/spring (which locks the unit from rotating during bit changing). The black spring is a horseshoe shaped piece and the opening should face upward with the chrome button in the hole on the bottom of the spring.
9. Reposition the entire assembly back into the case being careful not to disrupt the lock spring mechanism in the front part. (Note: Make sure the rubber bearing cover is reinstalled on the rear bearing first). When installing the brushes, make sure it is oriented in-line with the armature; put in the springs and place the blue caps back on being careful not to cross thread the caps (the caps seat flush with the unit).
10. Turn the armature with the front bit holder to make sure it rotates freely and not scraping.
11. Re-seat the black and white wires into their slots and make sure the strain relief is properly in place.
12. Put the cover back on; and screw the front housing back on the front. Then install two opposing screws on the unit. Retest the armature rotation by spinning the front bit holder. If free, you\'re all set; if it doesn\'t rotate freely, unscrew and recheck for restriction.
13. Test the unit. Reinstall the back clip.
