This is the flexible coupling which is attached to the gear pump, please make sure to check appropriate diagrams of your model for the correct location and use of this item. Over time the part may wear out and begin to fail eventually requiring replacement to maintain peak performance. Flexible coupler went bad on my troy-bilt log splitter

1. Removed the engine. Just 3 bolts.
2. Used an Allen wrench to loosen the set screws on both the top and bottom coupling.
3. Cleaned everything up and installed new flexible coupling.
4. Replaced engine. This part was a little tricky because you have to line everything up just right.

Flex coupling broke

1- Removed the engine
2- Removed the coupling guard and disconnected the hydraulic pump
3- Removed both halves of the flex coupling with the gear puller
4- Slid the new coupling halves onto the corresponding shafts and secured the coupling onto the engine shaft with the set screw
5- Temporarily attached the couplin g guard (rotated it 90 degrees so I had access to the hydraulic pump coupling) and hydraulic pump to achieve the proper spacing between coupling halves.
6- Aligned the coupling halves and mounted the engine temporarily.
7- Secured the coupling on the hydraulic pump.
8- Removed the engine and coupler guard.
9- Reattached the hydraulic pump and coupler guard.
10- Realigned the coupler halves and reattached the engine.

I was shocked at how easy this job was. My Troy built was designed in a way that all you have to do is remove the engine, 3 bolts to get the coupler out. Remove engine bolts, carefully slide engine off the coupling, replace the coupling, and reattach engine. That was it. Also, to gain easy access to everything I just tilted the splitter b ack until the splitting beam touched the ground, that put everything in front of me at a 45 degree angle. Piece of cake!
