Disassembled the lantern to include valve assembly and the safety check valve. Cleaned the valve stem with a brass bristle wire brush. Installed the valve stem packing verifying fit and ease of operation of the valve. Installed new check valve and air stem and installed new pump plunger. Once the new parts were installed, pressure checked the system and tightened the valve stem assembly in small increments until the valve stem no longer leaked. Reassembled the lantern and tested the operation. Lantern is operating like new and will have many years of use again.

1. Disassembled the flame control assembly by removing the knob (small screw in center of knob).
2. Remove bass fitting containing valve stem packing from shaft.
3, Thoroughly scrape remnants of old packing from inside of fitting.
4. Scrap remnants of packing from control knob shaft. Polish shaft with sandpaper. 220 gri t will do.
5. Insert new valve stem packing into fitting.
6. Replace fitting on shaft to engage threads and tighten, turning shaft to ensure a smooth fit. Tightening intentionally crushes the graphite packing to create a seal, but do not tighten more than necessary.
7. Replace knob, fill fount and test stove/lantern. If leaking or flames appear around the fitting, gently tighten until leaks stop.

Note: There are two sizes of the graphite stem packing for Colemen stoves. One for small diameters and one for the large stem. This site stocks the one for the larger stem. Check your sizin g before you start the repair.

Fueled up the lantern noticed it was leaking around the valve stem.
After ordering the parts I took the stem apart cleaning it up and installed the packing.
I looked inside the tank and saw a lot of rust an debris so I put a lot of bbs in the tank and rolled it round and round an up and down for a while.
Dumped the bb s and fuel out and put a air nozzle in and blew out the tank.
Put fuel back in and put new mantles on and fired it up.
Works like new! 1976 model 220c.
