Removed the gas tank for working space, then removed the dash and the shaft retainer to remove the steering wheel and shaft.
Replaced the gear and bushings and added the support plate that my early model did not have. This removed the play in the gear and allowed the steering shaft the fit tightly removing the looseness in the steeri ng ,when it was reassembled, it was better than new.

Steering pinion gear and seat bearing wear worn out and need to be replace. The retaining screw was very difficult to remove and I replaced it with a hex bolt should I ever need to repair it again.

First removed to front next carriage bolt to drop the front end of the deck to improve the work area. Removed the steering wheel. Removed the two back bolt of the gas tank tray and loosened the two front screw this slow the tank to be moved forward, this allows room to take the three bolts out of the steering wheel dash collar. Clamp a pa ir of vise grips to the steering shaft. Raise the tractor with a floor Jack or hoist and remove the retaining screw from the shaft located under the tractor, it will be difficult to remove. Remove the shaft from the dash end. Also remove the hex bearing and replace it with a new one this what the steering shaft gear end rests on and is made to be a sacrificed part, the bearing whole becomes worn to the point that will not hold the gear in an engaged position. Once this is is accomplished reassemble the steering system. Recommend that you check the gear engagement to the flat gear it interfaces with there are 24 teeth on the flat gear, I set the engage 13 teeth right 11 left. If you have to replace the flat gear also itGÇÖs two two bolts they will challenge your patients, itGÇÖs difficult to reach under the tractor two fins and engage a wrench and still address the other end on the top side, I made it a lot easier using a pneumatic 1/2 side wrench. I had to, job start to finish about 1 1/2 hrs, approx $90, hope this helps someone else.

Raise front of mower no need to remove deck on mine. Find the phillips head screw at the bottom of the steering shaft. Heat it with a torch to soften the thread locking compound. Unscrew that one and three other 5/16s self tapping screws to free the shaft from the mower. Use a half inch deep well socket to remove the steering wheel from the shaft. Replace with new shaft and don\'t forget to use thread locking compound on the bottom screw. Thats it.
