I was fortunate to find a shop handbook on line for this model, a self propelled 2008 Troybilt Series 860. Step by step instructions with photos were very helpful. You have to remove, the blade, 2 plastic baffles and drive belt to access the cable attachment point on the transmission. In order to reach the bolts on the rear baffle you have to unbolt the right handle and remove the right rear wheel and drive gears. It was not possible to release the plastic barbed fitting at the transmission end of the old cable, so I had to break it with vise grips. The small drive gear has a spring and washer behind it held in place by a removable pin. The small drive gear itself is held in place by a torx screw which requires blue thread locker on reassembly. I am a decent basic mechanic but this was not an easy repair and took a lot longer than I expected. eReplacement customer support did a great job helping me identify and order the correct part.

Back wheels came off, blade came off, took screws that held plastic under carriage on off. Then reach in behind left axle and took old spring and cable off, install new cable and spring, reassembled. While I was working on it I cleaned all the grass that was in these areas . Next time drain oil and gas out too. This is not that easy of a job but doable . Hope this cable last another ten years.
