The retaining ring fits next to the helical gear. This is a genuine Makita part sourced directly from the manufacturer for use in saws. This part is priced individually and is made of metal. A screwdriver and a set of snap ring pliers might be required during the replacement of this part. It will require replacing if it becomes broken.
Separated the case and removed the sanding belt which had attached itself to the plastic housing (housing melted around the belt). I then removed the snap ring securing the tension roller and removed the roller. Replaced in reverse. After the belt tracking was adjusted the sander worked as new.
