The square anvil assembly with the friction ring fits next to the shift shaft o-ring. This part is an OEM from Milwaukee for use in square impact wrenches and is available as an individual replacement part. It is made of metal and may require long torx bit sockets in order to do the replacement.
Removed nose cone screws and screws in handle. Then split handle keeping inside components on one side of handle. Removed nose cone containing anvil, washers, washer bearing and small steel ball. Replaced anvil and reassemble again.

Took all the screws out
Take a picture make note of how the wiring is ran threw the housing
Remove and used a blow gun to remove dirt off of moter
Pulled front housing off and put drive in
Lightly grease and put back together
Put the clear plastic pieces in both housings where the moter sits

Don\'t forget the little detent clip under the foward/reverse button
Tighten screws event watching for wires
Removed housing from gun, put in replacement anvil, piece of cake, Very impressed with your service, have recommended you to others, and will no doubt use Replacement parts again
