The moral of the story is: if you vacuum up a bug, be really careful while emptying the vacuum out the window...but if you *do* drop the filter and can\'t find it again, ereplacementparts.com is the way to go.

I unscrewed the outer shell so that I could remove the dirt that had packed around the motor. I cleaned it with a brush and cleaning cloth and screwed the shell back in place.
