Cast Iron Fuel Valve had crystallized and cracked off even with the bottom of the fuel tank, leaking gasoline all over the garage floor.

1.) Backed out the remaining top of valve with pliers that were still in the threaded fuel tank outlet.
2.) Placed fuel resistant sealant on new valve threads and threaded about half way into the threaded tank outlet.
3.) Chased the sealing nut with built in gasket up until snug against the bottom of the fuel tank (cast iron, don\'t over-tighten).
4.) I noticed that the fuel line seemed to be a little short, putting a fair amount of torque on the fuel shut off valve. Accordingly, I plan to insert a short piece of hose and barb into the fuel line so the added torque and vibration when running, don\'t set up another crack/failure at the bottom of the tank.
5.) I also ordered two valves so I would have a handy replacement should this valve fail again. I may simply replace the short fuel line with a longer fuel line piece to eliminate the in line splice.
6.) I also believe that ethanol in the fuel had swollen the rubber valve seal (on old valve) so that it was very difficult to open/close the valve by hand. If at all possible, use a high grade non-ethanol additive gasoline and the valve may remain operable longer.

Remove fuel tank and then old valve. This allows you to align and seat new valve properly. While tank is off, see if any other maintenance should be done. In my case, a new spark plug was a breeze.

I had to remove the 4 bolts holding the tank to the frame. Remove the tank and set it on its end. I loosened the fuel valve lock nut and removed the fuel valve by hand. I screwed the new valve into the tank, set the alignment and tightened down the lock nut.
