Broke off spigot on fuel valve when attempting to drain gas tank; problem solution: replace valve

The fuel valve itself is easy to replace; it just unscrews from the bottom of the tank. A rubber washer, supplied with the replacement valve and identical to the one on the existing valve, provides a seal to prevent gasoline leaks. The existing washer was in fairly good condition but I replaced it with the new washer anyway. The main prob lem was getting the old piece of broken spigot out of the thick rubber hose that attaches to the spigot on the new valve. The spigot appears to be made out of relatively brittle metal, which of course is why it broke off. Initially I tried to form a hook from a coat hanger, to insert into the broken spigot piece and catch the inner lip of the spigot piece in order to pull it out. But the thick rubber hose has such a strong grip on the spigot piece that I made zero progress with that technique. The solution was to screw a wood screw into the hole in the spigot piece. I chose a wood screw with the outer diameter of threads just slightly larger than the inner diameter of the spigot piece. Also I didn\'t press my luck by screwing it very far into the spigot piece, since I didn\'t want to risk splitting the spigot piece and contaminating the carburetor with metal fragments. The screw gave me a good grip on the spigot piece but I still was not able to pull it out. I figured the problem was the rubber hose material adhering to the spigot, so I squeezed the rubber hose material from the side in several places with vise grips to free up the adhesion, if any. Adhesion was likely the problem since I was then able to remove the broken spigot piece.
