1. The first step was to remove the choke knob. The secret: It pulls off. Once this knob is removed, the remaining steps become obvious.
2. Remove screws holding the carburetor cover and work over the choke stem.
3. All remaining fasteners are now exposed. Remove muffler.
4. Reassemble in reverse order. Pass the lo ... Read more ng bolts that mounts the muffler to the exhaust port through the muffler and hang the gasket over the screw ends. This is the only tedious past. Work carefully not to drop the gasket and start one screw, and then start the second screw. Once the screws have been started, the muffler can be pushed next to the engine without fear of dropping the gasket. Turn the screws almost all the way in. Assemble other screws. Snug the screws by finger checking to insure the parts fit and then finish tightening with a tool.
5. Work the carburetor cover in place, and start its screws and tighten.

Hint: On reassembly, apply a small amount of never-seize to the threaded fasteners. That will ease taking it apart again if ever needed.

The most difficult part: it was 10 F in the garage. What helped: I had an old electric fry pan. By turning the heat control to very low, low enough to not burn my hands, I could lay tools and parts in the pan and had warmed parts and tools.
