First step was to remove all contaminated oil and gasoline from the unit. I then flushed the engine using diesel fuel and then cheap, but clean motor oil. I removed the spark plug and was going to pull the starter rope to flush out any liquid that might have made it\'s way into the combustion chamber. After the first pull, the starter assembly wouldn\'t recoil and rewind the rope. I left the spark plug out and let the engine dry out in the sun. Before I spent any money on parts, I took the rope off the starter assembly and wrapped it around the engine shaft so I could spin the motor. I tugged on the rope and saw that I still had spark at the spark plug. At that point I refilled the motor with clean oil and gas. Then I ordered the starter assembly and new spark plug. They arrived early so I installed them within minutes of receipt. I took off the carburetor float bowl and used spray carb cleaner to clean the carb. I used my compressor to blow out moisture in the air filter. I then checked the cold starting instructions in the owner\'s manual and set everything as suggested. The engine started on the 4th pull! I let it run for a couple of minutes and then let it sit for a couple of days before attaching the 2 inch hoses to the pump and trying to start it again. The engine started on the first pull! It sat there pumping water for the next two hours without a hitch. I\'ve used it several times since with the same results. Kohler motors are tough and as long as you use genuine replacement parts, you will have very little trouble with them.

Gasoline leaking from the air filter compartment

Under the heading \"General Repair Info\" I have listed this repair as \"hard\" with total time at about 5 hours. If I have to do it again, I believe it will take 10 minutes and be listed as \"Easy.\" Also note under the heading \"Parts Used,\" I changed those parts as routine maintenance since I already had everything apart. As it turned out, I could have done it without taking anything apart.

The Gas leak was fixed by realigning the float in the fuel bowl where Gasoline is held before entering the carburetor. The float is expected to stop the flow of gasoline from the tank when the bowl is full. Since it was stuck, fuel filled up the bowl, then filled up the carb, then filled up the air filter compartment, then filled up my garage floor.

Always buy an engine that has a \"fuel cutoff valve.\"
ereplacementparts.com is wonderful. It has been my one stop shop for Illustrated Parts Breakdowns, maintenance manuals, and naturally the parts themselves. It is the first place I go when I have to work on engines.
