Fortunately, found a \"How To\" step by step instruction site on YouTube. Wrote down and closely followed each step. I\'d never done a \"head gasket\" replacement and was pleasantly surprised with the out-come. A tractor I thought was lost, has now been revived and is purring like a kitten.

Glad you guys were there with all the proper parts I needed!

Read about smoking engine (muffler) issues on several blogs and books. This led me to believe that the smoke issue on my tractor was either the breather or head gasket. I ordered a head gasket, breather gasket and the reed. Figured do them all at once. While waiting for the parts to arrived I decided to use the tractor one more time. A lthough the engine started I could not engaged the mower belt.
I found that the deck was clogged with leaves grass and whatever and had hardened over winter. It took a while to clean out as it was really bad. Finally got the belts to engage again and to my surprise no smoke from the exhaust. I\'ve used it several times and the smoke seems to have stopped. I investigated the pulleys and belts further, belts are fine but there are a few stops which rest against the blade pulleys at rest that had nearly worn through. I believe that all the clogging was adding stress back to the engine and causing the smoke. I\'m sure some of the material was pressing against pulleys and belts and just making the engine work harder. Not sure if my interpretation is correct but thought I would pass it on.Haven\'t used the parts yet.

Engine would kick back when trying to start. Like the engine had too much compression or was out of time. I took the engine apart and checked the timing; I had also taken the head off and checked the cylinder and valves. Put the engine back together using the new gaskets, adjusted the valves and installed a new keyway pin in flywheel. Put on a new ignition coil and replaced the drive belt. Now the lawn mower cranks over and starts.

The very first thing, even before ordering the new head gasket, was to watch a couple of You Tube videos to see what was involved since I had never replaced a head gasket before.

The most time spent on the repair was spent on removing the mower hood, exhaust, fuel input, etc. in order to be able to get to the head.
< br />After that the actual removal of the head, replacement of the gasket, and re-attachment of the head was simple.

My riding mower has Briggs & Stratton\'s OHV (overhead valves) and that is a pain to get the adjustment correct--that took about 30 minutes and is not included in my estimated time to replace the head gasket. The valve adjustment is a separate repair problem and needs to be done every year or two. I have found NO benefit to the OHV design--I have another riding mower with a Briggs engine and is over 10 years old and have never had a problem with it.

Final step was re-installation of all the various mower body parts.
