Product Description

?

This gasket set-valve is supplied by the original equipment manufacturer for use with Briggs and Stratton engines commonly installed on lawn and garden equipment. It helps to distribute the pressure evenly and provide an air-tight seal for the cylinder head. Over time components may wear out and begin to crack eventually requiring replacements. For the exact locations and the correct applications, please refer to the appropriate diagrams of your model. This high-quality set includes five composite material gaskets and one valve seal. You will need a wrench set to remove and reattach the cylinder head to perform this repair.

I carefully tore down the engine, removing the housing, cover, and then the head. The 8 head bolts must be removed in a pattern gradually to prevent warping or damage. I then used a wire cup brush on my drill and cleaned the piston head and valves and head assembly to remove carbon and buildup, and any remaining grime to assure a goo d seal with new head gasket. Reassemble, tightening the 8 head bolts in the same gradual pattern, torque to specs. Reassemble top of head, making sure push rods were in correct ports. (one is steel, one is aluminum). Reset valve clearances., new valve cover gasket, with sealant, replaced intake and exhaust gaskets. Engine started righted up, runs like a champ! No smoking, no leaks!

I jumped the gun initially and pulled the engine from the tractor, thinking the connecting rod had broken. I should have checked the valve push rods first. That would have saved me the time of removing the engine from the tractor and replacing the pan gasket and crankshaft oil seal.
It was pretty simple after I determined that my p roblem was the push rods. I removed the bent rod installed the new one I purchased from eReplacementParts.com. Adjusted the valves(You can find several youtube videos to guide you through this procedure). The engine started right up and I mowed about two hours with it this weekend.
I wish I could tell you why the push rod bent, but I can\'t. If anyone has an explnation I would love to here it.
