Carburetor was gummed up beyond cleaning and gas tank cap was cracked.

Removing the carburetor was also straightforward and I took a couple of pictures before I started so I had a good idea of how it should look after all was completed.Since I bought a complete new carb the replacement was straight forward although I had to reuse 2 gaskets that did ... Read more not come with the new carb. One was the air intake filter frame to carb gasket and the other was the carb spacer block to cylinder head gasket. Both of my old ones were in reasonably reusable condition so not a big deal (I will replace them at a later date).
Tip - be careful when disconnecting the throttle rod and spring. Note how it was before you disassemble (picture). Unbolt the carb from the cylinder head, then disconnect the rod and spring. This will require a little juggling of the carb. but it is not difficult. Reassemble in reverse order.

When the generator ran gas splashed out from under the gas cap.

Placed new gas cap on the tank.
Started the engine to check for gas splashing out.
New gas cap sealed the unit and no leaks after 15 minutes of run time.
Shut down the generator, let it cool and put it away.
