This is a genuine Milwaukee replacement part that has been sourced from the original manufacturer to be used with rotary hammers. The brushes are used to relay electricity to the armature by contacting the commutator bars. Over time the brushes will wear out and can cause the motor to smoke or spark, and the brushes will eventually need to be replaced. Replacing the brushes is a fairly common repair and these brushes are available in a pair.
