This is an original replacement part manufactured for use with Craftsman air compressors. The special filter is used to prevent dust or debris from entering the air intake on the cylinder head of the compressor's pump. This air filter should be changed during normal maintenance, and is available as an individual replacement part.

compressor locked up

removed the head and got the piston out,
cleaned all parts and freed up the piston rod and put all parts back with all new gaskets,
works fine now.
