This is an authentic Poulan replacement part for chainsaws. This metal back plate acts as a shield between the muffler, and small block. Overtime the plate can warp causing damage to the muffler replacing the plate can be beneficial to the life of the saw. We recommend replacing the gasket between the plate and muffler, the gasket is sold separately.
