The repair was fairly simple, the difficulty was opening the drill up as one of the Torx screws was deeper than the rest and a regular bit could not reach it. A Torx driver set would have done the trick but I ended up using a small flat blade screwdriver to remove. With the drill case split the motor can be lifted slightly to allow the shifter to be replaced, reassemble and test.
