Product Description

?

This is a genuine Ryobi replacement part, and is sold individually. Worn brushes are often the cause of a poorly running motor • Replacing brushes can fix an intermittent motor • New brushes can restore a motor's electric braking Carbon motor brushes are one of the most commonly replaced power tool components. Because carbon brushes are wear items, meaning that through friction and use they will gradually wear away, they will eventually require replacement. Worn brushes are common causes of intermittent motor function, reduced electric braking, and reduced motor power. A worn out brush will often be worn down near the wire lead and may be cracked, pitted, or burned. When replacing carbon brushes, be sure to also inspect your armature for burns, cracks, or other damage which indicates a larger motor problem.

Grinder began to stop intermittently and then failed completely. Inspection of brushes revealed one worn and one badly damaged motor brush.

Using a flat blade screwdriver, remove motor brush retaining cap. Remove existing brush. I was able to grasp one brush with my fingers and remove. The other required a pair of needle-nosed pliers to grasp and remove it. Insert new brush. Replace retaining cap. Repeat for other brush.

I bought this particular grinder because it has easily replaced brushes and it was easy. Removed the two screw on brush caps and the brush assembly (brush and spring) pulls right out. While you can just insert the new brush I chose to completely disassemble the motor to \"turn\" the armature end where the brushes ride and grease and lube everything. (FYI I bought two sets of brushes in case they go out of stock when I need to replace them again)

Replacing the switch is straightforward but disassembly of the handle is fiddley. Once all the screws are out you still have to gently pry the sides apart. Note how the wires are run as there\'s not much room and they have to go back the same way. And mine has a rotating handle so it has to fit into a channel properly too.
In a pinch, if you have the skills and a dremel, you can take the switch apart and swap the parts over to the other side and make it work. The switch is designed like two matching halves and only one side is used.
All in all it took about 30-60 minutes and it works like new. I hate to just toss out tools or things that still have lots of life left in them.

On My RYOBI 4 1/2\" Angle Grinder with Rotating Rear Handle (Model: #AG453) , I replace the brush & spring , which was real easy. 1. Disconnect the power 2. remove the plastic caps on side of the grinder with a flat screwdriver and finally remove brush & spring and just simply replace with the new set and replace plastic cap. BOOM!!! yo u are done.
