The purpose of the brush is to conduct the current in an electric motor which powers the tool, over time due to contact with an armature the material will wear away eventually requiring a replacement to ensure peak performance. It is a high-quality component which is made of durable carbon with an attached lead wire and is sold individually. Keep in mind the brush holder is sold separately.
