My Craftsman snowblower was rusting

Jerry - July 31, 2017
Tool Type

Snowblower

Difficulty

Medium

Time

More than 2 hours

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Power Drill, Socket set, Wrench Set, Grinder and brass brush wheel

I removed the auger housing assembly from the motor/pulley assembly. Removed the auger assembly from the auger housing, disassembled the augers from the auger axle and gear assembly, the sheer bolts broke off in the disassembly, as they are designed to do. Drilled out the broken sheer bolts from the augers and auger drive shaft. I disassembled the snowdrift cutters and various support parts from the auger housing. I used naval jelly to treat the rusted parts, basically the outer housing of the snowblower motor assembly, the augers, the entire auger housing, the snowdrift cutters and sundry parts of the auger housing. I then used a grinder and a poly paint removal grinder wheel to clear loose paint and rust off the outer housing of the snowblower motor assembly, the augers, the entire auger housing, the snowdrift cutters and sundry parts of the auger housing. I cleaned everything with mineral spirits and soap and water. Repainted all the parts with Rustoleum yellow or black enamel, where appropriate. I cleaned the snow deflector angle cable with WD40 and greased it with automatic transmission fluid, which was light enough to lube the cable without freezing in winter. Reassembled it all with new skid plates, new sheer bolts, a new auger shaft bearing and new click pins and tested it to make sure it still ran and functioned properly.

It all took several weeks but considering the cost of a new snowblower of this quality, and the effort to hand shovel a 75 foot drive every dang day next winter, it was worth it.
