Some common reasons for replacement are due to accidentally dropping the saw or something falling on it and causing it to bend or warp. The tabs that engage with the chain brake can also wear over time. The hand guard is part of the chain brake system on a chainsaw. It is mounted on top of the saw in front of the front handle and attached to the chain brake. If you experience kickback, your wrist will make contact with the hand guard as the saw swings in reverse. This will engage the chain brake, causing the chain to stop. To remove the old hand guard you'll start by removing the bar and chain. Then remove the starter assembly, the screws that secure the brake handle, and then remove the handle from the saw."
