Disassembled driver, found there's two main assemblies: the motor / gear-box, and the on-off trigger / circuit board.
Removed motor and jumped with test leads from battery directly to motor terminals, motor ran fine both directions, decided the fault must be in the trigger / circuit board. eReplacement had the correct OEM assembly so placed the order, part was delivered in 5 days. Toughest part was to "smunch" the new assembly within the small space provided in the housing, that took several tries and care so as not to get the boards or trigger cocked. The driver is close to 20 years old, I've used it a LOT and it owes me nothing, but it is so light and small, it's great for most projects that don't require a huge amount of power. Plus the batteries - originals - seem to last and last.
