Questions & Answers

My sliding crosscut saw suddenly stopped working. I had no problems at all before this. The brushes both looked very good. When I reinstalled them and hit the switch, it reacted once, only for a nanosecond. I did this a 2nd time, same results. Any ideas?
Dan Crowder for model number DW708
Hello Dan, thank you for your question. This issue could be caused by the brushes, brush holder, caps, the field, power cord, armature or the switch for the unit. The switch and armature are discontinued, so we would recommend checking/replacing the other parts listed above. I hope this helps!

Question: DW707 Type 4 Miter Saw

Frank2006

I am missing the pin that holds the saw down during storage. I can't find it on the diagram. do you know what part number it is?
WJA
The DW707 is a European model of which we cannot obtain parts for. The lock pin for the model number DW708 Type 4 is 387130-00
Question: Fails To Run

SteveC60

I am looking for help with the repair of my DW708. It fails to run. I have replaced the brushes and have tested for continuity in the switch. The switch appears to be fine. When I take the brushes out and put them back in the saw starts for a split second, then stops. If I pull the trigger again, nothing happens. If I uninstall and reinstall the brushes the I the saw will once again start for a split second. I have looked and the brushes appear to be in good contact with the armature. Any advise would be appreciated!
WJA
You might have a dead spot on your armature. Pull out the brushes and look to see if any of the commentator bars are darker than the other ones or are pitted or raised up.
Question: Homeowner

1241063

how do you change the arm locking pin on a Dewalt 708 miter saw?
You need to remove the pivot pin and spring. Then pull the saw mechanism out far enough to remove the old pin and replace with a new one. There is a video on removing the pivot pin/spring.
Hi,
First you will need to remove the stop that prevents the saw arm from swinging too far up.I can't remember on that model where the stop is.Once the arm is moved up far enough you can pull the pin out and replace it.Sorry I not more clear but its been awhile on that saw.Hope that helps.Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Question: Need To Replace Discontinued Bea...

Dstrong88

How can I replace this bearing if it is discontinued. Is there a similar bearing I can use?
Hi Dstrong88,
Dewalt uses what's called "off the shelf bearings"If you have the bearing out you can read the bearing mfg and bearing number on the bearing shield you can order on on ebay.If the bearing is destroyed you can take the bearing to a bearing supply house and they can match it up for you. Hope this helps.Good luck.

Question: "genuine DeWalt Replacement...

rebuilder365

Is "genuine DeWalt replacement part" in the description of "Ball Bearing 6302V a representation: 1. That the part fits?
2. That the part is O.E.M?
3. That the part meets DeWalt specifications for original manufacture?
4. All the above?
5. None of the above?
WJA
Hello rebuilder365,

As you are aware, there are many manufactures of ball bearings, and the 6302V is a very common bearing. I would think that Dewalt uses a bearing manufacture that meets their specifications and quality for the tools they manufacture.

Question: DeWalt DW708 Ball Bearing

zen0414

My DW708 makes a grinding sound when I disengage the trigger after a cut. I believe the sound is coming from the ball bearings around the the shaft of the arbor. Any tips on how I can remove the ball bearing from the gear and pinion ?
Hi zen0414,
You will need a bearing splitter to remove the bearing and a press to install the new one.Hope that helps good luck.

Question: DW708 Keeps Tripping The Power S...

Philip84

Hi, I have just finished replacing the armature and field but when i pull the trigger the blade spins for 1/2 a second before it trips the mains. does anybody know why?
when i spin the blade with my hand it feels a bit more stiff then before, do you think this could be part of the problem? Thanks.
Is it on an extension cord? Could be bad bearings slowing it down.
Hi philip84,
Well the fact that its throwing the breaker so quickly seems to say that you have a short.First are you sure that you have all the wires connected right ?If your in doubt let me know and I'll email you the wiring diaphragm but I will need your type number and email address.Something binding would be picked up in an amp draw. The amp draw on that saw should be half the rated amps or less on free speed.Hope that helps.Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Question: Dewalt 708 Type 1 Miter Saw Guar...

1167552

I am trying to replace the guard on my 708 dewalt miter saw and i watched the video that shows that you have access the the three bolts that secure the guard to the arbor. The video show that you have access to the three bolts once you remove the saw blade. When I remove the saw blade i don't see the three bolts. It is being hidden by a round bushing of sorts. How do I remove the bushing to get acess?
Hi,
The only thing I can see that would be blocking access to the three bolts is the Bushing,Arbor fig 79.That should just slide off the shaft.Hope that helps.Good luck.

Question: Wrong Way

1163008

i have a type four and just bought a new armature assembly...i took no wires apart wile replacing it and it is put back in the exact way it was takn apart and now my blade spins backwards!!!!!! does anyone know what is wrong please??????
Hi,
Yes either you ordered the wrong armature by type number or they shipped you the wrong one.Look at both armature and see if the winding on one is clockwise and the other is counter-clockwise.This is to my knowledge the only thing that would make the saw run in reverse.Hope that helps.Good luck.

Question: DeWalt 708 Switch

wannafixit

I need the switch (part # 153609-00) which I find is no longer made. Is there another model switch that will work?
WJA
Hello wannafixit,

The manufacture did discontinue the 153609-00 switch without a replacement. But what I have seen on line is that you can use the part number 606056-00 switch in its place. I can't guaranty that it will work, but it may worth a try.

Hi thocut,
Here's one on ebay. link removed | eBay

dewalt #606056-00 works to replace this switch. the new switch is wired backwards from the orignal one.
when you say wired backwards does that mean 2a_2b becomes 1a_1b in schematics
Question: Dw708 Motor Shaft Pulley Repair

Anthony1

I removed the drive shaft pulley and found that it had moved somehow and so go a bit chewed up. Other than that saw works fine. Want to buy replacement part #69 but I don't see that I can buy the pins to set the pulley (one of them is beaten up). Also, does anyone know how to set the pins? Thanks.

That's not the locking pin he is referring too. I can't find any help either. But if you undo the bolt holding the guard assembly it still won't move up far enough to take out the old pin. Looks like you would have to remove the entire blade/motor assembly.

Question: Swap Out Bearing, Or Get New One...

caruha

I have a DW708 saw with a bad armature. Have ordered/received replacement but seeing the many posts regarding the difficulty of removing the bearing #62, I'm wondering if it makes sense to try to swap out the old bearing or just buy a new one. I'm a carpenter not a mechanic and I don't have any type of bearing press. For that matter, do I need a special tool to install or reinstall the bearing on the armature?
Hi caruha, always replace the armature bearings when the armature is out as AC motors are very hard on bearings. You can find a cheap bearing puller at an auto parts store or bring the armature and bearing to a power tool repair shop and for a small fee the will do it. Even a lawn mower shop will most likely do it for a few dollars. If that bearing fails it can destroy your armature gear and secondary gear reduction so don't take a chance with using the old bearing.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Thanks Tinkerdave, appreciate your response.
Don't think it matters much but this saw of mine is a Type 4.
Question: Dewalt DW708 Type 4 Miter Saw

796917

I had an issue with what I think was a bad extension cord? The cord was one that had the lighted end which shows the power was on. While using the saw, the connection caught fire. After the fire the saw would not work properly (1/2 speed, and spin in reverse). After replacing all motor parts and a new switch, I still have the same problem where the motor spins at half speed and in reverse (directly plugged into an outlet). I have checked the wiring and all is according to the schematic which ereplacementparts was kind enough to supply. Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated???
Hi, The only thing that could make the saw turn in reverse to my knowledge would be that you did not wire it back up right. When you run the saw and release the switch the brake reverses polarity for a sec causing the saw to run in the reverse direction for a split sec.It seems to me you have the brake wire hooked up wrong and the brake is stuck in the on position.Your sure the wiring set up is for the type 4?
This is how it should be wired:

Black/Brown supply cord connected to 1A on switch.
Red brake lead to 2A on switch.
Black field wire to 1B on switch.
Yellow Brake lead to 2B on switch.
Now this is for the old 153609-00 switch that had been discontinued. If your saw has the updated switch then there should have been wiring instructions with it.Hope that helps.

Question: Change Motor

Rodney

I have moved to Australia and took my DW708 but the voltage is no good. Can I get and motor for a later model in Australia to fit and if so which model is compatible for mounting????
WJA
Hello Rodney,

You should be able to locate a converter/ transformer in Australia to run your 120 volt tools on 240 Volts. Try talking to some local construction companies in your area to see what they use. I know there are a lot of 120 volt tools being sold down under.

The difference between 60 and 50 hertz will not effect a universal motor. If you were using a induction motor your rpm's would be a little slower and it might run a bit warmer.

Question: Dust Collection

Ron

I'm trying to improve dust collection on my DW708. I noticed the last version, "type 4" , has a modified collection port that lines up behind the blade. My question will the newer port fit on an older dw708?
WJA
Hello Ron,

If you have a DW708 type 1 or type 3 and you need to replace any part of the dust collection, you will need to order part number 5140006-23. It converts the old style dust collection system to the new style.

Hope this helps,

Question: Switch Replacement

Luis

I am trying to repair a switch, but I forgot which color of the cord is red 2A or 2B?
I am trying to locate a replacement switch, but seems to be obsolete, discontinued, etc. everywhere I've searched as of 5-30-12. Where did you
find replacement switch?
WJA
Hello Carole,

Unfortunately the manufacture has discontinued part number 153609-00. We have been searching for a suitable replacement switch but yet have not located one. Hopefully in the future we will be able to find one.

Good luck,
-WJA
My saw is a type 3, and the Red wire goes on the 2A, the yellow wire goes on the 2B, the cord wire goes on the 1B and the motor wire goes on the 1A. Hope this helps. Ken
I have a few switches kicking around and am willing to sell them. A while back I needed a switch for my saw and it took me a year to find one, so I purchased a few extra. The are not the exact same switch, because they are from a different company. The black trigger is shorter on the left side, so there is about a 1/4 inch gap between the yellow handle and the black trigger. I have put it on my saw and it has been working great. I checked with the company and they no longer have them available. I will sell them for $25.00 each plus shipping if anyone needs one. Also, if you are mechanical inclined, it would be easy to switch the black trigger from the old switch to the new switch, and then it would be exactly what you had before. Also, if anyone has a black trigger from there switch asm, I would like to have one so I can switch mine also. Mine was trashed when I was t-boned in an auto accident and my saw ended up 30 yards away from my truck all broken up. If your interested, e-mail me at

Question: DeWalt DW708 Saw; Will It Harm ...

DougD

I noticed that the fan and armature are conveniently sold as one unit... however I only need the fan (maybe?).

I bumped the fan and broke off two blades while trying to remove the impossible armature bearing.

will it self-destruct in I run it with the missing blades or is it that precise?
I have run several saws with damaged fans. Over time the fan will get even more damaged since it is out of ballance. Other pieces of the fan will soon fly off maybe damage the field or armature itself.

Go to a Dewalt factory service center or another repair shop and ask if they have any old or damaged aramtures that you can have. We used to have tons of old armatures just for that reason.

Hi Doug,

Well lets say that it won't help! It could come apart on you like bec98x said. Also the cooling capability will be reduced which is obviously why it is there in the first place. If you can get your hands on a fan I would replace it. It sounds like you are past this part of the repair but we do have an article and video to help with the removal of the DW708 bearing. You can find it in the articles section of our website our by clicking the following link...

In replacing the bearings on my DW708 I noticed mt fan to spin freely; I assume it should be "fixed" to the shaft. Is that correct? I was just going to replace the armature but see that it is obsolete . Is there a way to secure the shaft and is that appropriate? Would there be somewhere to get an old armature, even if damaged, or would epoxy or JB Weld work?
WJA
Hello 1792384,

If anything would work I would think it would be JB Weld. But I would not want to be using that saw if it broke loose. Also the armatures are balanced at the factory. So even if you did the JB Weld, it would vibrate horrendously, probably making the fan come off..
