Question: Dewalt DW160 Help!!!

982422

I have a dewalt right angle drill DW160. The gear & spindle need to be replaced, part number 445414-01SV. I have been unsuccessful at removing the chuck as the gear is stripped. I tried to put the chuck into a vise and remove what I thought was a screw but it just stripped out. Can anyone advise me as to what I need to do in order to get this thing apart and replace the gear & spindle?
Hi Jacob,
We would need your type number to pull any service bulletins on the tool. But if I remember right the tool does not have a chuck screw in the center and is on a right hand thread. It seems to me they used a Loctite 271 to secure the chuck to the shaft. You may have to heat the shaft to get the chuck off.Get me your type number and I'll pull any service bulletins for you.Hope this helps.Good luck.

It's a type 3. If you look at the parts description I have item #32 sitting in my hand and everything from 32 down to the chuck needs to come apart so that I can replace item #39. I can't find any snap rings, screws or how this thing is held together.
Hi Jacob,
Lets first start with the tool all together and we will go step by step on taking the tool apart. The way I'm going to explain, is the to the best of my memory. We have repaired this tools but it been a couple of years ago. You have to be very careful when disassembling this kind of tool as it its like a puzzle and if you don't follow the steps carefully you'll have a frustrating time getting it apart and back together again. I've included the following service notes on DW160 type 3 for your reference.

NOTES:
2-Terminal crimp to be oriented inward on field case.
9-Rear bearing seal to face commutator. Press armature shaft shoulder flush to front bearing race.
15-Torque to 10-13 in. lbs.
25-Seal to face gear.
37,56-Washer for use with Jacobs 41BA chuck only. Torque chuck to 150-175 in-lbs. 47- Date code located on name plate.
LUBRICATION:
Distribute 9-11 grams (3/8 oz.) of Polyrex grease in front gear case.
Distribute 3-5 grams (3-16 oz.) of Polyrex grease in rear gear case before assembly of gear & pinion.

CAUTION:
When servicing Double Insulated Tools, it is extremely important that ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS BE USED and that REASSEMBLY OF TOOL IS IDENTICAL TO THE ORIGINAL ASSEMBLY.

1: The first thing that needs to be remove while the tool is together is the chuck.Has that been removed?
The chuck has not been removed and that is the problem. With the stripped gear on the spindle, by what means do I hold the spindle to loosen the chuck. I do understand that the chuck is reverse thread, I'm just not sure how to go about getting the chuck off. Again I have already started disassembling I can see the ground down gear. If you were to look at the parts break down here on ereplacementparts you will see item#32 and everything to your left of item#32 is in my hands and seperated from the armature assembly.
If the gears are stripped and you can't get hold of the gear or shaft ,then the chuck will have to be cut off the shaft .You will have to use a speedy wheel or hack saw and cut the chuck off.
Unfortunately, Tinkerdave is correct. Good luck.
